Dropbox installer silently fails under all circumstances

This is driving me nuts. In the course of supporting an unrelated issue, Support discovered that I was running a beta version of Dropbox (no idea how that happened), so they recommended I install the latest stable release.

Long story short: the Dropbox Installer doesn't install at all. The EXE launches, Windows asks for permission to change my system, a couple of seconds of hourglass cursor, and then... nothing.

Things I've tried in almost every possible combination:

  1. Run as Admin.
  2. Use the full installer.
  3. Turn off antivirus and firewall.
  4. Quit all background applications.
  5. Uninstall Dropbox first.
  6. Follow the Advanced Reinstall steps, including deleting Dropbox presence in appdata (including Local), Program Files (and 386), and Registry.

Whatever I do, whatever I try: installer silently fails. It doesn't even leave a mark in the Event Log.

And since I've tried step 5 above, I am now without an active instance of Dropbox on my system. So nothing syncs at all right now.

What could be causing this? What else could I try?

  • Color me embarassed. I use Boxifier, and Boxifier has an actual option 'Block Dropbox updates'. All good now.
