Can I change the PDF viewer in the Dropbox app on iPad?

  1. Is there a way to change/extend the PDF viewer in the Dropbox App for the iPad? When I click on "Open in" in a PDF, it only shows the option of Adobe, but I use want to use the Xodo app. Even when I uninstall Adobe it wants me to install it or won’t open the PDF on the tablet. I have tried installing other PDF readers and none will show up in the list to open the files
  2. When I open the files from Xodo directly, I keep creating conflicting copies or it won’t save the changes I have made.

Hi there agrosko - thanks for using Dropbox and welcome to our Community!

Could you please clarify your device's OS version and the version of the Dropbox mobile app?

Also, do you get the same results if you do this via a web browser instead of doing it from within the app directly?

Have you tried connecting another 3rd party app to achieve what you had in mind?

As for the conflicted copies, you can take a look here, for starters, and if you still have more questions, just let us know.

    Thanks!

      Hi Walter,

Even from the web version on Safari it does not give me any option for an PDF app to open the files from there. I checked the other third party apps but there is again only Adobe in the list, which I do not want to use.

It’s an iPad Air with 18.1.1 OS the app version is 406.2

      Thanks

Hi from me as well, agrosko! I believe connecting Xodo to your Dropbox account would be the way to go, like Walter suggested above.

Since this is a third-party app though, for which we can’t provide support, I’d suggest checking this with their technical support directly.

Otherwise, the solution would be to export your files from the Dropbox mobile app, edit them on your iPad with Xodo and then, re-upload them to Dropbox and overwrite the older version of the PDF.

    Hi,

Unfortunately, Dropbox on iPad doesn't allow you to directly change the default PDF viewer. However, you can work around this:

    1. "Open in" Options: When you click "Open in" on a PDF, ensure you have Xodo installed and set up for handling PDFs. If it doesn't show up, try the following:
      • Make sure Xodo is installed and up-to-date.
      • Try opening the PDF in Dropbox, tap "Open in," and swipe to find "More" to see additional apps, including Xodo.
    2. Using Xodo Directly: If opening PDFs directly from Xodo is causing conflicts, ensure Dropbox is linked in Xodo's settings for smooth file access and saving.
    3. Workaround for Dropbox: You could also manually open the file in Xodo and then re-upload the edited file to Dropbox to avoid conflicts.

Currently, Dropbox does not support an option to permanently change the default PDF viewer on iPad.
