I had several large audio files stored on Dropbox. I had not needed to access them for about four years. Today I tried to access them and found that they are not there: they have apparently not been deleted, nor moved.

What canI do to recover the files (for which I have been paying storage fees for years)?

Thanks to anyone who can offer advice.

Hey @mckeenge, welcome to our Community!

You mentioned that you didn't need to access the files for about 4 years.

Within these 4 years, did you access the account itself? I'm asking, because inactive accounts usually close after approximately 1 year of inactivity.

Is it possible that you created a brand-new account in the process?

Let me know more, and we'll take it from there!

No, I haven't accessed them for some years, I don't remember exactly how many.
I would be very grateful for your help.

Thank you!

Hey @mckeenge, thanks for the speedy response!

It sounds like your Dropbox account was deleted, and when you tried to sign-in, the system created a new account.

In this case, I don't think there's much to do in order to recover the content. I'm sorry.

I would like to cancel my account altogether. Can you tell me how to do that?

I am not very happy with this situation.

Hi @mckeenge, if you're referring to deleting your Dropbox account entirely, then you can do so by following these steps.

Hi Megan,

I tried to delete my account, but I am not sure it worked. Can you please let me know if my attempt to delete it was successful?

Thanks so much,
Gayle

Dear Jay,

Thank you for your message. I have one question, though. It is possible that I have a Dropbox account under a different email address. When I try to login in, though, it is not possible for me to enter an alternative address. Is there a way that I can find out if I do in fact have the other account?

Thank you,
Gayle [removed per Community Guidelines]

Hi from me too, Gayle! Please note that we don’t have account visibility on the forum, so we can’t see info on your Dropbox account.

However, if you have any other email addresses, you can check their inbox and spam folder for any emails from Dropbox. If you find any, then it’s quite possible you have a Dropbox account under that email address.

Can you clarify though what you mean when saying you can’t enter a different email address? Feel free to upload a screenshot here, so that I may have a look. You can do this by clicking on the small camera icon above your message box on the forum.
